Since Forcing at any rating is free the
only thing credits will do for you is to make
a fighter at a higher rating. The thing is
making a fighter at a higher rating will only
give you the average AP's of that rating to start
You will get much better AP's by botting a fighter up.

I didn’t know changing your gym name entitles you to credits...

To the best of my knowledge I never received any credits?

You did not receive credits because of the ip address you are using. It is associated with a gym that joined long before the offer was made and is not eligible for "New Member" credits. Any future gyms using that same ip address would also not be eligible.
