James "Whitey" Bulger gained his nickname after an accident at Puffy Marshmallow Company, where he fell from factory scafolding into a giant tub of melted marshmallow sauce. When he was removed from the tub 3 hours later his entire body was covered with a 1 inch thick coating of marshmallow, which was not removable. Thus, he is named "Whitey".
