1." Sugar"Ray Robinson/Walker Smith Jr. (173-19-6*109*)
The Sugar man was the greatest fighter of all time.He moved gracefully and punched viciously. He started his career in 1940 with 38 strait victories including a ten round decision over Jake Lamotta in 1942.In 1943 he gave Lamotta a rematch and suffered his first defeat by a 10 round decision .He avenged his defeat 2 times over the Bronx Bull.He also beat the great Henry Armstrong in 1943.After Lamotta Robinson coasted to a record of 112-1-2 with one nc untill he lost to Randy Turpin in 1951 by 15 round decision.Durring that span of victories Robinson fought a man named Jimmy Doyle in 1947.Robinson was very uneasy about this fight because he had dreamed the night before the bout that he had killed Doyle in the ring.He tried to call the fight off,but was talked into going through with it.Sadly Robinsons dream became a reality. He knocked Doyle out with a wicked left hook in the 7th or 8th and Doyle never regained conciousness. He died the next day.Robinson was crushed. He contemplated retirement, and many say his killer instinct died with Doyle. He avenged his loss to Turpin by late ko in 1951.Then in 1953 Robinson fought Joey Maxim and was ko'd in the 14th.
Joey Maxim is probably the only man to have beatin Robinson and "Jersey" Joe Walcott.Robinson then retired and sat 1953 out.In 1957 one of boxings greatest rivalries began, and it would last for four years.Fullmer vs. Robinson The Sugar Man was 37 years old and just beginning to show his age.He lost the first bout by 15 round decision. Then he won the rematch with a devistating one punch ko.Some say that was the single greatest left hook ever thrown. The third match was a draw, and Fullmer won the fourth match in 61.Robinson also had some very memorable fights with Carmen Bosilio in 57 and 58 in which he lost and regained his title.Sugar Ray should have hung them up after he avenged his loss to Bosilio. From that point on he was nothing more than an old warrior. He was still dangerous but very beatable, and he lost 13 times from 1959 through to the day he retired in 1972.In closing it was widely known that "Sugar"Ray Robinson's main reason for fighting was the money. He often renegotiated his contracts on the day of the fight ,and if he was'nt happy then he did not fight.I don't think he even wanted to box.He just wanted the fame.He tried singing ,dancing, and acting, but nothing brought the cameras his way like the squared circle. So he boxed. He boxed like no one had ever boxed,he boxed like no one will ever box,and boxing was'nt even his main interest. All I can say is imagine if it was.
2.Cassius Clay/Cassius X/Muhammad Ali (56-5*37*)
"Float like a butterfly.Sting like a bee!"No fighter in the history of boxing was ever as loud as Muhammad Ali.No fighter in the history of boxing ever backed up their words like Muhammad Ali.
Cassius Clay bursted into the public eye in 1960 when he won an Olypic gold medal in the light heavyweight division. His hands were as quick as a featherweights. His feet were even faster. He went pro in the same year.He started to become known for his cocky predictions and taunting rymes. Most people watched his fights because they wanted to see the cocky-colored boy get beatin.Knowing that fans are rooting against them might have affected some fighters but not Clay .He had far too much character to be affected words, and he knew that the people that were racist against him had far too little character to handle watching a black man tell them exactly what he's going to do before hand, and in a way that grabbed the publics eye.He continued to disapoint the public through to 1964.LISTON vs CLAYEveryone and their mother predicted Clay would be knocked out by the fearsome Liston. And the more the public predicted he would lose the louder Clay talked, and the more Clay taunted. He even wrote a memorable
poem that had the public falling over laughing.....Ofcourse Ali had the last laugh.Ali dominated Liston with the exception of the 4th round in which he almost quit because Liston had rubbed something into his eyes. With the help of Dundee Ali weathered the storm and Liston didnt answer the bell for the 7th round."I shocked the world!!!!!I shook up the world!!!!Im a baaaaaaaaaaaaaad man!!!!!!" With that fight the public stould up and took notice that Clay was for real.He was the next Joe Louis with a few thousand more amps ofcourse. They actually started to look at Clay as a representative of America. Then he changed his name to Cassius X,and the public canned that idea. The resentment towards him arose again. He signed to fight Liston again, and right before the bout he changed his name to Muhammad Ali.The public once again laughed at Ali,and mocked him by calling him Clay against his wishes.....Once again,Ali laughed last.Ali vs. Liston 2
was probably the single most contraversal fight in history.Ali stopped Liston in the very first round with a punch that was faster than the human eye.Liston stayed down for ten while Walcott fumbled over himself trying to keep count.Liston got up and the fight continued untill the timekeeper told Walcott that Liston had been down for ten ,and the fight was stopped. Many people say the fight was fixed ,but I've seen the shock waves roll down Listons neck in slow-mo.That punch was as real as they get.Ali earned his name in the majority of the publics eye.Ali then went to 30-0 before he was imprisoned for refusing to be inducted into the military. He gave up his title, and did'nt return to the ring untill 1970.He was very unpopular with those that supported the war.He found himself having to earn his respect once again. In 1971 Ali signed to fight Joe Frazier.A lot of people wanted Frazier to kill Ali.Ali vs. Frazier Frazier did not disapoint the people. He gave Ali an orange sized lump on his chin and won the decision. Then Ali went through a good list of opponents untill he faced Norton in 73.He lost one and won one against him in the same year, but he looked bad in both fights. The public interest in him dwindled untill................
Ali vs Frazier 2 This fight action packed from bell to bell, and Ali earned his respect back by displaying the greatest heart boxing has ever known. He won a 12 round decision.Ali vs Foreman Still 1974 and Ali saw a chance to get his title back. The only problem was that he had to do it against a monster that had ko'd in 2 the very man that had pushed Ali to the limits of his game twice.Joe Frazier.Nobody picked Ali to win this fight.I think he even doubted himself several times when the cameras werent rolling."Ali boombaya!!!Ali boombaya" Ali used the excitement of his fans in Africa to fuel his fire, and began to taunt Foreman like he had never taunted anyone before. He taunted Foreman with the force of a nation riding on his side.He twisted Foreman's mind, and it payed off in the bout.Foreman jumped on Ali from the opening bell.He wanted Ali's blood.Ali seemed to be overpowered from bell one.He layed against the ropes while Foreman pounded him.It was tough to watch.A great champion was being dismantled.
Ali had a plan that not the fans, the press, nor his own corner knew about.Ali wanted Foreman to throw himself out,and Foremans anger towards Ali contributed to Ali's plan.In about the 6th round Foreman started to show wear.Ali started to come back alive. He started to counter Foreman's heavy blows. The crowd rose to their feet as Ali's plan began to pay off.In the 8th round Ali
