Wayne van Dorp is one of the few Dutch Hockey players that made it to the NHL.
As a young gun when he was playing for the local Hockeyclub I supported -GIJS Groningen- he was part of the best ever Dutch National team that reached the 1980 Winter Olympics. The Dutch team caused an upset by taking the lead 0-1 against Canada shorthanded (after bodychecking Canadian starplayer Guy Lafleur causing some bruised ribs and eliminating the poor Canadian from the game!).
Wayne went on to play for the Edmonton Oilers, Pittsburgh Penguins and Chicago Blackhaws in the eighties. His name turns up frequently in the penalty stats ;-)During the 1989-1990 season he started in 61 games for the Blackhawks as a left winger scoring 7 goals and grossing 303 penaly minutes.
"I was trying to make friends, but he's a hard guy to talk to. I'm not fluent in cement."--Kelly Chase, on tough guy Wayne Van Dorp. Chase had earlier called Van Dorp a cement-head.
