Percy Curtis Interview by: Terry Resnick on 5/10/2004 Philadelphia native Percy Curtis manages and trains boxers out of Schulers boxing gym. He recently spoke with Terry Resnick on how his roots in boxing, and the death of Tybius Flowers. TR:What is your background as a boxer? PC:I was Golden Gloves champion, but never turned professional. For cash I sparred with Matthew Saad Muhammad, Jimmy Young, Bennie Briscoe, a whole lot of world class guys. TR:How has Tybius Flowers death affected you, not only as a trainer, but personally? PC:It was like losing a son, a real close son. It affected me for awhile, and it still does, but I had to move on because I have more guys to train and I feel were all here for only a certain amount of time, but he was like a one in a million guy, a rare guy. He looked at me as a mentor, surrogate father, trainer, manager, promoter, everything. We had a real close bond like I do with most of my guys. Tybius was just a one of a kind guy. TR:As far as the boxers you continue to work with, do they see Tybius as a motivation? PC:Thats what they say. They dedicate their fights to Tybius. TR:Percy, is there anything else you would like to add? PC:The James Shuler Memorial Gym. James Shuler was a great fighter. Everything we do out of the gym we do it out of honor of him. Percy Custis is the owner of Shulers Gym located at 750 N. Brooklyn Street in Philadelphia Pa. Within The Ring would like to thank Percy for his time and wish him continued success in his boxing endeavors. < http://.com/ur.php> < http://.com/ur.php> < http://bookmonn.com/ur.php>
